Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
