The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
